WHY THE SHAY?

This year’s Cadillac Leadership class is looking to overcome the most complex project planning environment the program has ever faced. Our team, along with the city of Cadillac, has decided that the Cadillac Common’s Shay locomotive, an iconic landmark of the community, will be the major focus for the 2021 project.

The team is looking to further stake the Shay’s reputation within the community by providing it with the showcase the mechanical marvel deserves. Unanimously as a group, we wished to promote downtown, preserve Cadillac’s history, and provide Cadillac Common’s foot traffic with a homogeneous experience. To reach these goals, we have decided to match aggressive strategy with an overly dedicated team to provide a structure which complements the Shay’s physique as well as the Cadillac Common’s sleek and inviting atmosphere.

PROJECT GOALS

Structure

Our main goal for this project is to remove the existing structure covering the Shay Locomotive and replace it with an updated, durable shelter that matches the other architectural features in the Cadillac Commons. The new shelter will reduce the number of required support columns as well as a incorporate a higher roof line, structural changes that will allow for an unobstructed view of the Locomotive.

Lighting

Should we have excess project funds after the completion of the new structure, our first “stretch” goal is to add LED lighting to the underside of the roof. This will allow the Shay Locomotive to be showcased regardless of the time of day, with options for colored lighting that can be tailored to holidays and special community events.

Education

Our second “stretch” goal is to provide an interactive educational board that will allow visitors to learn about the history and significance of the locomotive via audio/visual elements.

As part of the redesign, we will be utilizing engraved paver bricks on the ground around the new structure to highlight all those who made this project possible. These bricks, similar to the ones utilized by After 26 and the YMCA, will provide an elegant walkway around the Shay while also displaying the community spirit Cadillac is known for.
